ALASKA HOUSE MAJORITY SEAL

JUNEAU – Representative Vance (R – Homer) is taking action to stop one of the most heinous crimes in Alaska – Human trafficking. Human trafficking is a global problem that affects millions of people each year, with an estimated 25 million victims worldwide. However, this is not just a distant tragedy; it is an extremely prevalent issue in our own neighborhoods. Alaska has a rate of 148.7 sex crimes per 100,000 people, making it the highest in the nation. In a survey of ten U.S cities, including New York, Anchorage had the highest rate of trafficking. One in four girls and one in five boys at Covenant House Alaska reported being victims of sex trafficking.

As Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Vance has announced a new initiative to raise awareness about this heinous crime and protect vulnerable Alaskans.

She is committed to informing the Legislature and the public about this pressing issue and is encouraging immediate action to ensure the safety and security of our communities. Join us in supporting Rep. Vance’s initiative and taking a stand against human trafficking. “Our goal this week is not just to inform but to expose potential gaps in our justice system that may hinder reporting by victims or witnesses and even the prosecution of human traffickers,” Rep. Vance stated. Your voice matters and your actions can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by this unspeakable crime.

Over the next week, the Judiciary Committee will hold three hearings regarding Human Trafficking in Alaska, followed by an in-depth look at HB 68 Crime of Sex/Human Trafficking:

  • Monday, March 13th at 1 PM: the Alaska Department of Public Safety will give its report and recommendations from the Governor’s Council on Human and Sex Trafficking.
  • Wednesday, March 15th at 1 PM: presentations will be heard by two of Alaska’s human trafficking advocacy and awareness organizations, Priceless Alaska and MyHouse Alaska.
  • Friday, March 17th at 1 PM: a presentation by Alaskan survivors of human and sex trafficking.

Rep. Vance’s office encourages Alaskans to attend these hearings in person or live stream on akleg.gov

You can attend these hearings in person in the newly expanded seating area of the Gruenburg Committee room. Room # 120 on the first floor of the Capital or via the internet at https://akleg.gov/index.php#tab5 or on https://www.ktoo.org/gavel/.
