PALMER – Today at the Palmer State Fair Governor Dunleavy signed into law House Bill 141, designating June 9th as Don Young Day. The Alaska House Majority is honored to be part of this legislation commemorating the extraordinary service of the late Congressman Don Young, who dedicated 49 years representing the interests of Alaska both in the nation’s capital and at home.
Throughout his remarkable tenure as the longest-serving Republican in congressional history, Congressman Don Young “Dean of House”, left an indelible mark on Alaska’s history. As Bill Sponsor and Rules Chair, Representative Craig Johnson (R – Anchorage) stated, “It’s an honor to have sponsored a bill that recognizes the exceptional service of Congressman Don Young. His advocacy for Alaska’s interests and his relentless pursuit of economic growth and personal freedoms for all Alaskans will be celebrated every June 9th.”
With his deep commitment to Alaska’s prosperity, Don Young championed causes that resonate to this day. From driving natural resource development to advocating for Native Alaskan rights, and from pushing for vital infrastructure improvements to protecting our Second Amendment rights, his legacy is woven into the fabric of our state’s progress.
“Congressman Young’s 49 years representing the 49th state earned him the respect and admiration of generations of Alaskans. His accomplishments are legendary both here and in the nation’s capital. I am proud to say he was a friend of mine and it is an honor for me to sign legislation creating Don Young Day. I also want to thank Representative Johnson for sponsoring this bill.” Stated Governor Mike Dunleavy.
The overwhelming support by the House and Senate in passing HB 141 is a testament to the deep respect for Congressman Young’s legacy and the profound influence he had on the state of Alaska. By instituting Don Young Day, the people of Alaska have the opportunity to annually commemorate the life of this distinguished public servant, ensuring that his values and dedication continue to inspire us all.
