JUNEAU – The Alaska House Majority passed House Bill 341 (HB 341), which would officially name the Galena Department of Transportation’s Maintenance and Operation Station after the late Marvin Thurmond.

Marvin Thurmond, a dedicated employee, and a cherished member of the Galena community, is set to be forever remembered with the station’s new moniker, the “Marvin Thurmond Galena Maintenance and Operation Station.”

Representative Mike Cronk (R-Tok), sponsor of the bill, shared, “In supporting this effort, we’re not just naming a station; we’re preserving the memory of a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on our community. It is a privilege to sponsor this bill to honor Marvin Thurmond and the positive impact he had on Galena.”

The bill garnered unanimous backing from present and past Department of Transportation employees in Galena, as well as widespread support from the public.

Importantly, the Galena community’s commitment shines through, as workers at the station have generously pledged their time and materials to make this naming a reality.

HB 341 acknowledges the collaborative effort to recognize Marvin Thurmond’s legacy and the positive impact he left on Galena. This naming stands as a symbol of appreciation for individuals who’ve made a lasting difference in our state.
