ALASKA HOUSE MAJORITY SEAL

JUNEAU – The Alaska House Majority has passed House Concurrent Resolution 16 (HCR 16) in commemoration of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), observed from April 21 to April 27, 2024.

NCVRW, established in 1981, serves as a beacon of solidarity, urging citizens to confront barriers hindering justice for all victims of crime. The theme for 2024, designated by the US Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime, “How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors,” resonates as a call to action to create safe spaces for victims to share their experiences, offering crucial support, life-saving services, and hope.

The passage of HCR 16 reaffirms Alaska’s commitment to safeguarding victims’ rights and addressing the challenges and trauma they face. As we honor NCVRW, events across Alaska, including the STAR Masquerade Ball, the Victims for Justice Ceremony of Remembrance, and the 2024 Victims Service Awards, underscore our collective dedication to supporting and uplifting crime victims.

“We are grateful for the progress made in safeguarding victims’ rights in Alaska,” remarked Representative Craig Johnson (R- Anchorage). “However, we acknowledge the ongoing need to reduce trauma, ensure dignity and respect for victims, and provide avenues for them to regain their sense of security. HCR 16 underscores our commitment to these principles.”
